What version of *BSD are you running and also what version (or package) of kermit
are you running?

For a interim fix you might try:

stty -f /dev/cua00 clocal

and then run kermit.
if you are running freebsd 2.0 you can grab a kermit package from ftp.cdrom.com
or you can retreive the sources from kermit.columbia.edu cku190.tar.Z
and do a make freebsd2
