It ain't the way I do it, but then again, it wouldn't be the first time somebody did it differently than I do. Here's how I do it: tar cvzf - /usr > /dev/(tapedrive) Have you tried it that way? Hmmm, I had a couple snags with my tape drive (but it isn't QIC80, it's an Archive one that can use the WT (wangtek) QIC02 drivers. It works, but initially I had to screw around a lot finding the right /dev/ interface to it (there were a whole bunch for various formats within QIC80).
