I ran into similar problems, when running early versions of linux and
BSD/386.  My problem went away when I added more memory (I replaced 8 1M
simms with 4 slightly faster 4M simms); I suspect that memory speed may
have been related in some way.

I never did figure out exactly what the problem was, unfortunately.
