Just finished installing FreeBSD-2.0 on my new machine, and wanted to get some feedback from others with similar hardware as to whether or not my machine is a) configured right and b) getting the best performance possible. Machine is: dx4/100 VLB Motherboard 486dx2/66 CPU 16MB RAM (single 72pin SIMM) Buslogic 445S VLB Controller (terminated) (id7) Micropolis 1GB SCSI-2 hard disk (unterminated) (id0) Panasonic SCSI-2 CDROM (terminated) (id1) dmesg reports: bt0: Bt445S/ 0-PCI/EISA/VLB(32bit) bus bt0: reading board settings, busmastering, int=11 bt0: version 3.37, async, parity, 32 mbxs, 32 ccbs bt0: Enabling Round robin scheme bt0 targ 0 lun 0: type 0(direct) fixed SCSI2 bt0 targ 0 lun 0: <MICROP 4110-09TBCU0322LHT01> bt0 targ 1 lun 0: type 5(readonly) removable SCSI2 bt0 targ 1 lun 0: <MATSHITACD-ROM CR-503 1.0f> With a 40MB iozone test (iozone 40): Writing the 40 Megabyte file, 'iozone.tmp'...25.062500 seconds Reading the file...16.335938 seconds IOZONE performance measurements: 1673537 bytes/second for writing the file 2567531 bytes/second for reading the file On the micropolis I've jumpered "Sync Negotiation Master" and "Sync Termination Master" and on the bt445S I have it switched for slave mode. If I put evreything to its default, I get 1MB/second slower on reads, but writes are the same. I'm a tad confused, and perhaps asking a lot to get faster than this, but I would have expected a bigger increase in performance between ISA aha1542 and VLB bt445s ...
