Amiga fans aren't neurotic. They're fucking disgusted. In 1985 the Amiga had most of the user-visible functionality of NT, except for the memory protection. It ran on a machine that was about as powerful as a PC/AT with no hard drive, in about the same memory (640K + frame buffer vs 792K including frame buffer). And even at that it was more responsive than Windows on a 386/25. This doesn't mean it'll run a raytracer that fast or anything, just that when you ask the computer to do something (like open a window) it did it faster. That's not making up facts. That's a matter of observed behaviour. It's not anything surprising. that's the difference between real-time bare bones operating systems and kludges. Now Linux isn't a realtime system, but it's definitely about the leanest UNIX like system you can easily get on a PC, short of QNX... which is a realtime system. It shouldn't be surprising that Linux in 8M on a 386 can be more responsive than NT in 20 on a Pentium (or whatever the ratio is). But in both cases, if you say that people think you're making claims that the system as a whole is faster or more powerful. Of course it's not... but for someone sitting in front of it not doing much numbercrunching it gets their work done just as well, which is, after all, the important thing. .... Yes, I've seen idiots with Amigas who don't understand what they're doing make outrageous claims. And I've seen idiots do the same for Linux. And I've seen them do the same for Windows and Mac OS and MS-DOS and NT and OS/2 and... there are idiots who jump to conclusions in every user base. From the article, it sounds like the authors should count themselves among that number.
