This is a pointer to Info-ZIP's announcement of its latest file com-
pression/encryption software. The announcement is in comp.sources.d
with the following subject line:
REAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Info-ZIP Zip 1.9, UnZip v5.0, and utilities
and it contains some important information about the release. (And
yes, this message is appropriate to all the groups to which it's being
cross-posted; follow-ups to comp.sources.d or to the group in which
you are reading this, please.)
The following is an addendum to the announcement:
(1) I haven't yet seen either WizUnZip or the encryption/decryption
sources yet, but they should be out soon. There were last-minute
changes to the WizUnZip documentation files, and the crypt stuff
must be posted from outside the US.
(2) Timo Salmi and Arjan de Vet reported at least one and possibly
two bugs involving zip's -l (convert end-of-line) option. It
truncates files greater than 64K (patch will be posted to c.s.m
soon), and in combination with -j (junk paths) and a full path
specification, there may be another bug (not reproduced yet).
(3) Charles Hannum reported a bug involving zip's -m option (move
files into zipfile) wherein there are "dangling directories"
or some such when zipping as root on an IBM RS/6000 AIX system.
We don't have any more details on this yet; I assume he means
that zip isn't removing directories after itself when it stores
files recursively.
(4) Several people have contacted us recently about porting both Zip
and UnZip to the Amiga; the UnZip port appears to be finished (not
tested yet, though), and the Zip port is claimed to be almost done.
So please contact zip-bugs@cs.ucla.edu before doing it all again,
and we'll put you in contact with the others.
(5) The Summary line of the announcement should read "comp.sources.misc",
not "comp.source.misc".
(6) The utilities to which the announcement refers are, in addition to
Zip and UnZip themselves, the following: ZipNote (add/edit zipfile
comment or individual file comments); ZipSplit (split a large zipfile
into smaller pieces); ZipInfo (detailed information about zipfile
structure); FUnZip (simple Unix filter version of UnZip, most useful
in conjunction with tar); and ZipCloak (stand-alone zipfile encryption/
decryption program).
Finally, to repeat something from the announcement: archive sites are
still in the process of getting all the pieces of the release, so WAIT
A FEW DAYS if the files aren't there yet! Just keep telling yourself,
"patience IS a virtue." :-)
