I made the switch from Linux (0.95) to 386bsd (0.1) almost three years
ago now (three years in may), but I think that it was so long ago that
saying the switch was worth it isn't really important to you now (since
both platforms have changed greatly).

Look on freebsd.cdrom.com in /pub/FreeBSD/packages.  Tons of precompiled
stuff there.

Sounds like it makes sense, esp if you want to learn about BSD administration,
etc.
