hello
i've tried the following on the same machine under FreeBSD and Linux:
- log in via xdm and start the same environment (xconsole, fvwm +
GoodStuff, 2 x rxvt, 2 x tcsh in both as shell and top in one of them)
- i looked at top - how much memory is free (Linux has much more then
FreeBSD - by keeping the merged vm/buffer concept of Linux in mind -
ok - i'm a bit wondering - it's - nearly the same environment on the
same machine)
- now i start 3 times an rxvt and look to the free memory - thus i can
calculate how much memory is needed for one of them - and it's for all
of them nearly the same - as i expected - then i do the same with the tcsh
- then i exit all the shells and rxvt's and look again to the free
memory
-> what is the result ? (i set the starting value to 0)
Linux FreeBSD
before 0 0
each rxvt 514 716
each tcsh 300 400
after -56 -348
--> my question: where does the big difference come from - it's the
same hardware, the same compiler, the same source of the apps, the
nearly same environment, the libraries are nearly equal in size, both
systems link shared - there does the difference of about 25% come
from ? - thanks in advance - t
