: Personaly, I've never had any "support" from a comercial vendor that was
: worth a damn. Definitly you should not use linux if you are completely
: computer illiterate. Dos either for that matter. The only computer for
: those who don't have a clue is the Mac. Even then, it's not a toster.

I've experienced the usual support nightmares. (``Yes, I know you've
paid for membership in our special support system, otherwise the
operator would have kicked you off our 1-800 number immediately,
but if you really want to get that question answered in a hurry,
you should dial our 1-900 number, so you can pay us $3/minute for
the pleasure of listening to music and our marketing announcements.'')

Despite this, I do remember occasions of getting great service. I
remember calling with a hardware problem and having two guys on sight
within an hour, to swap everything out of the system except the power
supply and the drives. Of course, we had bought more than $250k worth
of hardware from them that year, with expected sales of over $300k the
next year.

Nearly every electrical engineer believes deep in his heart that he
is a better at writing computer programms than any computer programmer,
and can show as proof the fact that he has written a number of small
applications, each of which was done quickly, easily, and exactly met
his needs.
