When you compile a kernel without `options MSDOSFS' and then say `mount -t msdos something...', the `mount_msdos' program is smart enough to dynamically load /lkm/msdos_mod.o for you. (This is why it's important to make sure that your LKMs and kernel are the same version.) See vfsload(3). I would have to know what that ugly-looing message at boot is. I suspect the problem can be easily remedied by putting your DOS partition after / and /usr in your /etc/fstab file. -GAWollman -- Garrett A.
