I'm one of those superstitious types who never, ever, ever uses domain names
in route.  IP addresses only.  While I don't know what your
particular network setup is, make sure that mcgee.infi.net is in your 
/etc/hosts file.  Better yet, don't use the name for your route add, use
the IP address.  In another VT, try using "tcpdump" to debug the connection
("tcpdump icmp" might be a good place to start.)
