This is probably obvious to somebody, but not to me.

This is FreeBSD v1.0 ( CD-ROM) and XFree86 v2.0

When i close twm, xinit doesnt quit ( twm is the last program started in
.xinitrc )  - this leaves the console with the usual X startup messages but 
in a non communicating state - whatever you type is echoed to the screen - 
but thats all.

ps... shows xinit is still running, it is necessary to kill the original
login shell to restore the console to normal operation.

Hardware:

386DX40  AMI bios
8 Mb ram
ET4000 SVGA, 1Mb, tseng labs int'l vga bios
IDE hd
AHA1542C/F SCSI ( for CD-ROM drive )
 
i can run X11 for Coherent v4 and SCO's ODT on exectly the same hardware 
without problems.
