Hwa-Jin Bae <hjb@netcom.com> replied: % yeah, yeah, yeah... we've all heard that before. Per Abrahamsen (abraham@iesd.auc.dk) queried: : Why do you take offence with that statement? : From reading the newsgroups I get the general feeling that Linux : attracts a lot of new users and talent to Unix, while *BSD is more : like a dream come true for a large part of the existing Unix talent : out there. This is part of the reason I find Linux so exciting. : It is of course a generalization, and has the weaknesses all : generalizations have, but I can't see how it can be considered : offensive to either part. Thank you. I meant no slight to Linux; I believe it is a masterpiece (the kernel) in a very interesting frame (the rest of the contributions). Linux is teaching much of the world about this religion, er system, we call UNIX. 4.4 BSD is, to most UNIX hackers, the last and hopefully best of something we're not ever going to see anymore. There is much to learn in there, and being able to run it on affordable hardware is a true blessing. The FreeBSD and NetBSD teams have done remarkable jobs of taking the university BSD-Lite release and making into a stable, reliable operating system. And, if I'd *meant* to insult the Linux users: "PC-Dweeb: Hey, pasteurized-processed-UNIX-like-food-product can run on my brain-dead little Intel-inside glorified calculator!" ;^) I'm gonna get flamed to death for this one, aren't I? Send the flames to Jordan Hubbard (jkh@violence.berkely.edu), he's already got Nomex undies. Wes Peters
