Then why *did* they admit Linux was good? Or didn't you read the whole  
thread?

Let's face it, NFS isn't really a very good network file system. Even from  
the Un*x point of view, it doesn't adequately preserve the Un*x filesystem  
semantics. It's way too slow. And if you want to use DOS clients, you need  
far too much memory, and the security is broken every which way. Hell,  
there was recently a discussion on the linux-kernel list about fixing  
Linux-related security problems in NFS, which resulted in the realization  
that it's just not possible.

SMB does some of these better, especially the speed thingie. (Of course,  
some things are worse - what do you expect from a MS invention?) Then  
again, I wouldn't want to use NT as an SMB server, I'd use Samba on Linux.  
I might use the free MS DOS and Windows client software from  
ftp.microsoft.com (a NT machine, I believe), though :-)
