I read the FAQ on 386BSD and the basic end result was something like this:
Most East Coast people are SysV, and West Coast people BSD. Get what
your friends have so you can help each other out. They're both
free and we have a lot to be gratefull for that. Try them both/all out
and see what suits your best.
I used to have Consensys SVR4 and it really served me well for almost 3 years.
I just picked up FreeBSD and it really seems like a solid system. I've worked
on a variety of UNIX systems, and it seems quite competitive if not more
complete than something one might purchase. I've no doubt Linux is as well
from all I've heard.
