I struggled with this exact problem for hours. 
Apparantly the password table entry is not adequate to get  su to
think you are in the wheel group.
After taking two days and much RTFMing the man pages, i'm close to
deciding that the reputation is correct. This *nix or Un*x or BSD
stuff is just too cryptic.
 It took me almost that long to figure out how to add a user.
And I thought I was a reasonably sophisticated computer user.
I make my living as a consultant with them.
A pointer to the Newbie sysadmin FAQ would be helpful!!!
Do the Linux folks have such a document? maybe I could get it translated?
