Hallejah! I finally got pppd up and running. I am using
a modification of the scripts from the ppp FAQ in /usr/share/FAQ.

Anyway, here are a bunch of questions:

My line often drops after 30-40 minutes. Is this my problem,
my RBOC, or my ISP? Only once has it lasted any longer (12 hrs.).

My machine does not know how to find interesting machines out
there in net land. i.e. I can say 'ping ftp.uu.net' and it
says 'ping: unknown host ftp.uu.net'. I assume that I have to
run dns, or something like that. Pointers?

I think I understand how to do auto-connect ('connect' in the options
file), but how do I tell pppd to take itself down after an idle
time (say, 10 min)?

Thanks for you help,
for these and many previous questions,
-David
