Plus CDROM plus tape plus scanner plus all the other junk you put in
there and now you need to get a full sized MB instead of a mini because
your slots are all full of custom controller cards and you need a bigger
case for that... and EIDE has all these little extenders shipped on the
disk so if you get a new O/S you need to reinstall them and oops you
didn't know...

All for a $50 price point five years ago.

The reason these things are easier than SCSI is because the people working
on making the software easy spend their resources on what's popular. You've
got the cart before the horse... when IDE was just getting started it was
a major pain.
