Lines: 80 Message-ID: <RD.95Mar4101642@tarpit.oau.org> NNTP-Posting-Host: localhost.oau.org I installed 2.0 from the January 1995 Walnut Creek cdrom and find it frequently crashes. FWIW, the same hardware has successfully run BSD386 1.1, NetBSD 1.0, and QNX 4.22. The crashes occur frequently while building a kernel and lock the system such that only a hardware reset will recover. CAPS LOCK doesn't even toggle the keyboard LED when this condition occurs. Disabling the cache doesn't correct the problem. I'm particularly stumped since this machine was happily running NetBSD 1.0 from the very same partition immediately before I replaced it with FreeBSD 2.0. Any suggestions are welcome. Here's the dmesg output (AMD 386DX-40 w/ 64k cache & ULSI US83C87 math copro): FreeBSD 2.0-RELEASE #2: Tue Nov 22 13:59:59 1994 root@fnord.cdrom.com:/usr/src/sys/compile/GENERIC CPU: i386DX (386-class CPU) real memory = 4194304 (1024 pages) avail memory = 2998272 (732 pages) using 42 buffers containing 348160 bytes of memory Probing for devices on the ISA bus: sc0 at 0x60-0x6f irq 1 on motherboard sc0: VGA mono <4 virtual consoles> ed0 not found at 0x280 ed1 at 0x300-0x31f irq 10 maddr 0xd8000 msize 16384 on isa ed1: address 00:00:c0:9d:bb:41, type WD8013EPC (16 bit) sio0 at 0x3f8-0x3ff irq 4 on isa sio0: type 16450 sio1 at 0x2f8-0x2ff irq 3 on isa sio1: type 16450 sio2 not found at 0x3e8 sio3 not found at 0x2e8 lpt0 not found at 0xffffffff lpt1 not found at 0xffffffff lpt2 not found at 0xffffffff fdc0 at 0x3f0-0x3f7 irq 6 drq 2 on isa fdc0: [0: fd0: 1.44MB 3.5in] wdc0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7 irq 14 on isa wdc0: unit 0 (wd0): <WDC AC2540H> wd0: 515MB (1056384 total sec), 1048 cyl, 16 head, 63 sec, bytes/sec 512 wdc1 not found at 0x170 bt0 not found at 0x330 uha0 not found at 0x330 ahc0 not found ahb0 not found aha0 not found at 0x330 aic0 not found at 0x340 pas0 not found at 0x1f88 sea0 not found wt0 not probed due to I/O address conflict with ed1 at 0x300 mcd0 not probed due to I/O address conflict with ed1 at 0x300 mcd1: timeout getting status mcd1 not found at 0x340 ie0 not found at 0x360 ep0 not probed due to I/O address conflict with ed1 at 0x300 is0 not found at 0x280 le0 not probed due to I/O address conflict with ed1 at 0x300 ze0 not probed due to I/O address conflict with ed1 at 0x300 npx0 at 0xf0-0xff irq 13 on motherboard I have managed to configure a kernel with DODUMP, KTRACE, DIAGNOSTIC, DDB and "SYMTAB_SPACE=158940" as well as removing some unneeded drivers and options. That kernel drops into the debugger sometime after probing devices with a panic: holdrele: holdcnt `show map' indicates "fatal trap 12: page fault while in kernel mode". With all the crashing problems while building that kernel, I'm not at all confident that the latter kernel is worth further debugging. -- RD Thrush rd@cs.ucf.edu FAX (407) 841-8004 Genesis Controls, Inc.
