There is a bug in FreeBSD 2.0-RELEASE that make a process dump a core when it tries to exec() after a failed exec(). Remove the superfluous exec()s in /usr/src/gnu/usr.bin/tar/rtapelib.c and you made the trick. Thanks for the help. PS Someone in this thread wrote about problems with tar and files in /proc directory.
