In other words, "slowly catching up to the *BSD's..." :) I had to ditch Linux because it's NFS and general network performance is so poor compared to FreeBSD's. I can't go up to the boss and say, "why don't we wait a few months and see if Linux's net code gets better?" Betting on the future isn't particularly wise. : Since FreeBSD supports so little in the way of hardware (scsi controllers : for instance), Eh? What esoteric hardware are you into? : From what I can gather from friends who are into : the free BSD's, there is no progress on this front. I just saw someone post to freebsd-hackers a benchmark that showed 6 MB/sec transfer rates through an FDDI card plugged into his 486/66 machine using alpha drivers. I can't wait for that driver so I can plug in FDDI or fast Ethernet into my 486 PCI box. I'd say that's progress from my 600K/s Ethernet interface. :) : Support for the free bsd's is lacking also; try going into irc sometime : and asking a question in the bsd rooms (if there are any), chances are : you will get no replies or a nasty one if you are lucky :^). Try #unix or #root sometime. The reason why they are nasty to *you* is because they can sniff a Linuxer from ten hops away. ;-) If you want truly excellent support for FreeBSD, join one of the many freebsd-* mailing lists and read the comp.unix.bsd.* groups. I have nothing but praise for the FreeBSD development team. : If you go : into the #Linux channel (always there) or LinuxNet (better), you usually : get help immediately. This seems to apply to the newsgroups as well. Not any more so that other OS groups, in my experience (yes, I did run Linux for a little while before I switched). BTW, if #linux is so friendly, why is it always +s now? ;-)
