I solved my problem with secrdist.
I re-unpacked it into a new tree, found what it had overwritten
and re-ftp'd original (2.0R) copies of those files onto the
existing installation. It worked.
The moral of our story - don't unpack things if you don't
know what it's going to do. If it doesn't work, DON'T try
it as root unless your REALLY sure what it does.
