I'll be speaking from my own experience here, and I've installed both Linux and NetBSD and at the moment I'm running NetBSD 1.0 on my PC at home. When it comes to installing I will definitely give the prize to Linux. It's just easy. It's even easier if you have a CD-ROM, but even with floppy installations (about 50 1.44mb disks) you just sit back and use your mouse to tell the install utility what to install. Plus when you get one of Linux distributions, like Slackware for example, you basically get the lot: system, system utilities, X11, X11 utilities, games, fonts, you name it, it's there. Also Linux supports just about any piece of hardware ever made for a PC. So if you have smoe weird hardware then get Linux. With NetBSD it's a bit of a different story. You really have to get everything yourself, unless you can get a NetBSD CD-ROM, because there a no complete distribution packages that contain everything you might need( not as far as I'm aware of it). Then once you've got the stuff you have to install it. These days installation is not too bad with the addition of "package" tools, but you still will have to do a bit of playing around with some stuff. One advantage of having to do a lot of work yourself is that you'll learn heaps that way. Also NetBSD only supports well known and established hardware. One advice that I can give you is: get whatever your friends have because then you'll be able to help eachother. I hope I this will be of some use to you. cheers, Tomek -- +------------------------------------------------------+ | /\ tm | | /--\TOMEK tpiatek@comp.vuw.ac.nz <-- New Zealand | +------------------------------------------------------+
