Thanks for all the responses.  Apparently gnutar (which comes with
netbsd) includes more info in the tar files than SunOS tar.  Thus
SunOS tar gets confused when extracting things from a gnutar (gtar)
archive.  Everything extracts fine with the netbsd provided "Extract"
shell script.

BTW: NetBSD is an excellent piece of work, and installs easily on my
A3000.  Smatterings of one weekend invested, and I now have X11R6,
Mosaic, a color X11R6 display server, and plenty of other stuff to
add.  Good work!
