Essentially use pipes: cat filelist | cpio -oBcv | compress | dd of=/dev/rmt0 (OK so you may need to put some blocking options on dd, but you should get the idea.) To unarchive: dd if=/dev/rmt0 | zcat | cpio -iBcdv Remember - very few UNIX commands do everything, but they can be hooked together easily. I guess the exception is perl(1) and probably cpio [-alphabet] :-) Regards ======================================================================== David T.
