I've poked around on popular distribution sites and so far haven't found anything more useful than a list of systems FreeBSD runs on. What would be ideal is a list of drivers, any known issues, and general stability level. For example: Adaptec 1540 and friends. Rock stable ISA SCSI adapter. 16 Mb ISA DMA limitation overcome using bounce buffers. Fair performance. or Fred's PC VESA LB SCSI. Works in my PC on alternate mondays. Doesn't use DMA, interferes with keyboard I/O. I got a whole meg/sec out of it, just ask my dog, he saw it! The end result of this research will be a heavily used news server (64+ megs ram, several 2+ gig disks) built on a shoestring budget. Drive controller and network interface information is far more interesting to me than CDrom and graphics card support. Since I haven't bought any hardware yet, war stories or sage advice from anyone who's done similar stupidities would be deeply appreciated. Please, please send me any information you have. I'm desperately trying to avoid having to read everything under netbsd-current arch/i386 =) --leo p.s. and if you're a Linux weenie reading this, you may wish to tell me how great Linux is supporting various hardware. p.p.s. if no such hardware compatibility list exists, I'm volunteering to mung received information into a first draft version.
