While the load on these hosts is not large (but it is getting larger), they have been very stable and have shown excellent performance; only gopher has given any problems (occasional segmentation fault), and I suspect a bug in gopher. Hardware WWW/FTP/DNS box: 80486DX2 66Mhz, Adaptec 1542CF SCSI host adapter, D-Link NE2000 compatible ethernet card, 16MB RAM, 2 Seagate drives (ST31200N & ST32430N) totalling 3GB, HP35470A 2GB DDS tape drive. Hardware for user host box: i80486DX2 66Mhz (Acer/Altos), same tape drive, BusLogic EISA SCSI host adapter, 36MB RAM, Seagate 12550N 2.1GB HD, SMC8216T ethernet adapter. I will be setting up a secondary mailhub, DNS server and WWW caching proxy for our St. Croix campus soon to reduce dependance on the St. Thomas campus equipment (and reduce WAN bandwidth demand) and I hope to use FreeBSD v2.1 if it is out in time, otherwise I won't hesitate to use v1.1.5.1 since it is working out splendidly. UVINet has about 400 hosts on it so far, mostly Intel/MS-Windows workstations but with 8 NetWare fileservers and 7 Unix hosts (soon to be 8). All these hosts are connected directly to an Ethernet internetwork supporting TCP/IP, IPX (Novell), and Appletalk protocols. The FreeBSD user host described above hosts public schoolteachers here in the VI, most UVI users use PC-based IP applications (winsock or MacTCP). UVI Faculty and Staff (some students) can dial into an IBM RS/6000 and use shell accounts or SLiRP for remote access. -- | John Lucas jlucas@uvi.edu | | Academic Computing NIC Handle: JL423 | | University of the Virgin Islands (809) 693-1216 | | St. Thomas, VI 00802 http://www.uvi.edu/jlucas.html |
