I have a older no-name brand 486DX33 notebook sitting in the corner. A

Any chance of making this puppy into a portable unix box?

Chances are pretty good. You can probably put linux on it, it runs on just
about any 386 or better out. You may not be able to fit all the
development libraries, TeX, X, emacs, etc on it, but you should be able to
put up a functional system.
