Weber (prw1@cornell.edu) had the courage to say: : We want to run yp on a FreeBSD client, however everytime we run ypcat we : get an error message that says can't talk to portmapper? Can anyone help : me with this? : Thanks! : Paul R. Weber : prw1@cornell.edu Well, you've provided way too little information for me to tell you exactly what the problem is, so I'm going to have to guess. Your problem could be: - You don't have networking configured correctly on your machine. - You don't have 'portmap' running; YP is an RPC service, so you have to have the portmapper running to use it. - You don't have your NIS domainname set correctly. Be advised that FreeBSD 2.0's NIS support had quite a few bugs in it. It could be made to work, but not without some aggravation. 2.0.5 should be much better. -Bill -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~T~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ -Bill Paul (212) 854-6020 | System Manager Work: wpaul@ctr.columbia.edu | Center for Telecommunications Research Home: wpaul@skynet.ctr.columbia.edu | Columbia University, New York City ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Møøse Illuminati: ignore it and be confused, or join it and be confusing! ~~~~~~ "Welcome to All Things BSDish!
