I just replaced the SPARCstation on my desk at work with a PC, and my job is Unix sysadm. Why? Because our department budget is increasing, the number of projects we are working on is skyrocketing, and Emacs just doesn't cut it as our sole management tool. I want a good word processor, I need budgeting software, I need some small flexible databases, I need a PIM to keep track of my life, I want contact management software to keep track of all our varied user interactions, and I need something to deal with a growing inventory tracking hole. All of these are available on the PC; half of them came *with* the PC and the others are costing less than $200 each. I miss the Sun workstation: windows seems to GPF when I open more than a half-dozen X windows, plus Netscape, plus a half dozen PC app's. But, last time I checked, Wordstar for Unix cost more than a maximally loaded Pentium.
