I've been fighting similar battles with both NetBSD and FreeBSD. NetBSD finds and initializes the controller (I set it to IRQ 9 using EZSETUP), but keeps insisting that the shard memory is corrupt; it claims to have received zero-length packets. My favorite FTP site is carrying FreeBSD 1.mumble and I didn't discover there was a newer one until after I had downloaded the thing, so I decided to continue on with it. However, it insists my Ethernet card be set to IRQ 5, an option not allowed by the EZSETUP program. My card is an antique 8003.
