The chipset has _nothing_ to do with the problems you list below.

This is a known problem.  It is documented in the installation help file included
on the boot floppy.

You are using an old ALPHA version of the boot floppy.  Get an updated version
from ftp.freebsd.org.

/dev/wd0a is mounted as /

Nothing to do with it.  (Yes, I _have_ installed FreeBSD on a number of OPTi
based boards.  None have given me any trouble.)
