I stumbled upon it. In an effort to show one of my buddies
how Unix allows one to change the very behavior of an
environment, I had added ~/bin to the beggining of my path.
In bin I put an executable shell script called cat. Cat
printed out the stupid little phrase.

I out ~/bin at the end of my path and recompiled my kernel and
voila!

Thanks for the suggestions.
