I stumbled upon it. In an effort to show one of my buddies how Unix allows one to change the very behavior of an environment, I had added ~/bin to the beggining of my path. In bin I put an executable shell script called cat. Cat printed out the stupid little phrase. I out ~/bin at the end of my path and recompiled my kernel and voila! Thanks for the suggestions. Arthur
