Yes, here's a negative gripe about "the major systems".

They are inconsistant about which motherboards and parts they use.
What they typically use varies from production run to production
run; Gateway is especially problematic this way.

So it's impossible to prive anyone who asks for one with a rule
of thumb that covers "the major systems".  Instead, you have to
fall back descriptions of the components and hope that they can
get the right components out of their suppliers (or pick the right
production run from "the major systems").

Sorry the picture isn't better.  "The major systems" are interested
in margin, not in providing the highest performance/quality product
that they can provide.  For that you have to go to a reputable
system builder (like Rod Grimes or someone of that caliber) and buy
from them.
