I've never seen this behaviour (also on an Intel : 486DX/33). Well, I followed both suggestions -- disabled npx0 and stopped messing with an "emergency shell". I was also holding my breath (-:. From the second time it worked out. And as now I already have recompiled the kernel for my devices. My life is fine except for one thing -- how to make vnode devices?
