Of course, if the table of contents was written by someone
other than the manual's main author, it wouldn't make much
difference.  But two different people wrote the select and
connect system calls and didn't communicate well, they might
run into some pretty snaggly problems before long.

You can't have it both ways.

Out of curiosity, Tim old salt, have you ever read a book
authored by more than one person?  "The C Programming
Language?"  "The Unix Programming Environment?"  "The Design
and Implementation of the 4.3BSD Operating System?"
"Webster's Unabridged Dictionary?"
