All NetBSD related software has been ftp'ed from netbsd.rmit.edu.au. Patches 0->5 applied & installed soon after OS install. Machine configuration: BT-445S SCSI controller 150mb archive viper scsi tape drive SiS motherboard with 3 VESA slots, bt controller in slot #2, #9 GXE in slave slot DX2/66 1.05Gb Conner SCSI2 drive (CFP1060S) SMC Elite16 ISA ethernet card Symptoms: - random crashes of programs. Programs like vi, vipw, csh, sh, more and ldconfig have all crashed at completely unpredictable times. Very unusual since I use (and have used) NetBSD since 0.8 with very few problems (thanks... :) on an IDE based system - we tried getting XFree86-3.1.1 to work, and it once complained of a syntax error in the XF86Config file. A reboot made the syntax error disappear. X now starts correctly, provided the above programs dont fail... Is this symptomatic of a geometry problem or something more sinister (we tried using the same geometry settings as DOS rather than what the GENERICBT kernel prints when it starts). Attached is the kernel config file we are currently using and some layout information which might help.
