Have you tried disabling the external cache? In fact, since he specified that his motherboard has an SiS chipset, I'll underscore that: my SiS chipset has an incompetant external cache, which must be disabled for busmastered DMA to work. Disable the external cache and try again. (And if it then works, see if you can trade in your motherboard for something not designed by cementheads.)
