	I tried the "cat < /dev/psm0" and it does give the message you report,
however, I installed XFree86 and the mouse works fine.  I suspect that
the mouse device does not like being catted from, as "cat > /dev/psm0"
does not complain.  I would install X and see if it works (I suspect it will).
