You will need to install the IMAP daemon that comes with the UNIX pine 
distribution. There is a port of pine 3.91 in ports-2.0/mail on the 
FreeBSD archive. I built it last week, and it was flawless.

The pine documentation will describe how to enable IMAP as an internet 
service. It involves a straightforward editing of a couple of files in 
/etc. Not much more than installing POP3.

IMAP is (IMHO) a vastly better protocol than POP, since it allows true 
remote mailbox manipulation.
