The OPTI chipset/AMI BIOS combination is working for others.  I'm running 0.1
(and ran 0.0) on an OPTI-495WB with AMI BIOS without problems (486DX50 ISA).
This combination is also known to work under Mach and Linux.  You might try 
changing some of the parameters in the AMI setup.  The default worked for me.
