Well, the European (CCIR?) HDTV standard (not proposal) is set at 1250 lines. These are gross, of course - some of the `lines' happen during vertical flyback - but I believe that it would have at least the same ratio of data lines to total lines that the old 625 line standard has, which would imply at least 1160 lines.
