Well, it turned out to be a problem of the AHA1742 controller.

When installing, the install program did warn about the disk
geometry not being compatible with the BIOS. I then used a
geometry I looked up from a dual channel Adaptec system with
the same IBM drive. In fact, the install program didn't produce
any more warnings about the disk geometry...
But as said before - the problem persisted :-(

This morning I formatted the disk with MS-DOS, then looked at
the disk geometry MS-DOS was using and for sure it did use one
I didn't try before.
To make the long story short: with this disk geometry the in-
stallation went well and the system booted from the hard drive
by itself.
