What am I missing? A nameserver. If you haven't created the file /etc/resolv.conf the resolver library will attempt to query a nameserver running on the local machine. Your best bet would be to create /etc/resolv.conf with the following contents: domain your.domain.name nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx nameserver yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy nameserver zzz.zzz.zzz.zzz (where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx etc. are the IP addresses of suitable nameservers (e.g. your provider's servers). You could also run a local (caching only) nameserver - however, this is more complicated. See the man page for named if you are really interested.
