Okay I'll answer myself.
BSD does not support IDE CD-Roms. It says so in the FAQ, or the
install notes, could be the readme, or... I can't remember what else I
read. But I do know I read one hell of a lot of docs. It was only when
I couldn't get it to work that I had to read through each one again
line by bloody line and in all the docs, hundreds of pages there is
ONE line that says :-
"Note: CD Drives with IDE interfaces are not supported at this time".
I bought the CD to install from. Once the installation is done I'm not
worried about using the CD. Its my first CD drive, its not my machine
even. It was bought for my use, I would like to use it to learn unix
will I have a good machine to play with. Finding a difference between
CD drives is new to me.

It looks like Linux doesn't support IDE CD drives either?
So can anyone please tell me if there is any way around this.

No?
