/ and swap on the IDE, or / and /var if you prefer.  It's also a good
idea to have swap splitted across multiple disks, this might enhance
paging.

I think the BIOS can't.  Or you disable the drive in the BIOS setup,
but it's hard to boot DOS then.  (Remember that the act of booting is
performed by some BIOS, not by FreeBSD.)
