FreeBSD, like any OS with some clue, will happily use all of Your disk in this configuration - just tell the mainboard config all of the cylinders of Your disk and not only 1023, and swith off all LBA stuff. FreeBSD will use all cylinders - only DOS (and the root-Partition of FreeBSD, for booting!) won't work beyond 1023. >Does anybody know if/when FreeBSd will support E-IDE or heads > 16? I don't see why this should hurt. FreeBSD can use disks up to 4095 cyls. DOS cannot, due to a BIOS misconception. So there is an ugly hack done, in hiding the unaddressible tracks thru larger (non-existing!) head-num- bers. Unix-like OS don't need such a hack and likely won't boot correct- ly with such a hack. Since unix-like OS can use the whole disk (possibly reserving ~480MB for DOS) without the ugly hack, i can see no reason why one should re- implement the hack.
