On my BSDI 2.0 system, when I type:

% passwd
Changing local password for USER.
Old password:
New password:
Retype new password:
passwd: updating passwd database
passwd: password changed elsewhere.  no changes made
%


So what gives, what bleedingly obvious fact am I missing from
the man pages regarding passwd (1,5)?
