FreeBSD is  4.4BSD-lite  based where   386BSD is, AFAIK,  still  Net2-based
(i.e.  post  4.3BSD).  As for   design details, FreeBSD   is different from
386BSD,  especially in respect to VM/cache  design.  FreeBSD has an unified
VM/Cache buffer.
