The trouble was (and is) that, although Netscape appeared to be working fine, I couldn't access 'www.freebsd.org' - which is rather annoying. It's particularly annoying because I can dial up, to the same connection that my FreeBSD host uses, with a DOS/WINDOWS machine running Chameleon, and have no trouble at all reaching the FreeBSD web pages. In fact that is what I do when I want to look something up. The responses I received at the time suggested the usual stuff about checking that I can ping the host, look at traceroute, etc. All of that worked fine. In fact, the symptoms are more subtle. I have no problem pinging the host 'www.freebsd.org' or 'freefall.cdrom.com' to give it its 'real' name. When I request the freebsd home page through Netscape, it gives the progress message 'Connect: Host contacted. Waiting for reply...' almost immediately. After that, nothing happens until a timeout when I get a popup telling me that the connection was reset by the remote host. I have spent some time investigating this problem. I have used SLIP and PPP connections (using both 'pppd' and 'ppp'). I have used 3 different web browsers (Netscape, Chimera and tkWWW) and the results are always identical. I have come to the conclusion that something deeper is going on here... In order to look more closely at this problem I have built the bpf device into my kernel, in order to run 'tcpdump'. Unfortunately, I know precious little about tcp/ip, and would appreciate help from a friendly network hacker who could tell me what's going on. Sorry to be so long winded, but this has been bugging me for 2 months now, and is the only blot in my experience of FreeBSD.
